As cool as this show may seem, I have a bad feeling the ratings just won't be there to keep the show going. Will Thundercats appeal to kids the same way Ben 10 has over the past few years? It's hard to tell, but we do know that a couple 80s favorites have failed in the past. Now we have this new Thundercats show, and while I, a 29 man-boy, thinks this show looks cool, but are kids going to go for this? The primary audience for the vast majority of cartoons is children the adults that watch it are just a nice buffer in the ratings for most shows. Same thing happened to Masters of the Universe, which was infinitely better than the original show, but after a season, it too was gone.
#THE NEW THUNDERCATS CARTOON SERIES#
Joe seems to get a new series every other week, then it disappears into the vault of 80s reboot failures. After I saw the trailer, I was a bit more pumped, but a thought occurred in my tiny, fan-boy brain: Who is this show geared towards? Reboots of cartoon classics don't seem to last too long. Why remake this show? It didn't make sense to me.

Now that you've watched it, I have a few questions on my mind: Who is this geared towards? What seems to be the big differences? Is this a good idea? = TEASER = I hope he still yells "HOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" The first time I saw the sketches for the characters, I was a bit bummed out. Hopefully, you've seen the trailer for it.

Recently, however, Cartoon Network picked a new Thundercats series up. you make the call), I own all of the original series, and I still think it holds up as a good show overall. I don't know what it was about the show, but I couldn't get enough of it, and as an adult (or man-child. ThunderCats is currently slated for a July release on Cartoon Network.Out of all those wacky, high-concept cartoons I watched as a kid in the 80s, one of them really stuck out: Thundercats. Even so, it's a noticeable step above the old series on a technical level, and much more appealing than leaked footage from the cancelled CG adaptation.īe sure to watch the trailer until the very end: there's an auditory treat for fans of the original series. Animation is turning out some truly impressive stuff these days, and Studio 4☌ seems to be demonstrably behind, even in the action-packed trailer (WBA provides the character designs and artwork, while Japan-based 4☌ is doing the actual animating). There's still room for sci-fi elements including missile-firing mechs and a Thunder Tank, (gotta sell the kids something!) but the action of ThunderCats will be more He-Man than G.I. The new cartoon seems content with more sword-and-sorcery fare, with bows and arrows, catapults and such, in addition to the close-quarters weapons of the original. The '80s version of ThunderCats took place in an unmistakably sci-fi universe, with spaceships, battle tanks and (gasp!) laser guns. Judge for yourself - watch the ThunderCats trailer below: The new design should make him more appealing to the 8-12 target demographic, and get the point across that he's very much a leader in training. Lion-O was originally a 12-year-old who was artificially aged - a detail lost on many. His more child-like stature is on display as he spars with his father Claudius (voiced by Larry Kenney, the original Lion-O) and wields the Sword of Omens. Changes to body type, color patterns and facial structure allow viewers to easily pick out the individual characters, though Panthro is notably absent.Įasily the biggest gripe that fans have had with the new series is the depiction of Lion-O as a teenager. The biggest stylistic change of the new series: character differentiation. There's a significant bit of geopolitics on display on Third Earth (for a kids' show, in any case) and a more pronounced prophecy plot device.

The tone and direction of the series seems to be taking a significant shift from the original cartoon. Fans are also treated to their first glimpse of classic ThunderCatsvillains like Mumm-Ra and Slithe.

The trailer represents the first extended look at the classic characters in their revived forms, with full battle sequences and voice accompaniment. It was released to the Internet shortly thereafter. After months of teasing, Cartoon Network showed off a full trailer for the new cartoon series at WonderCon last weekend.
